About ENACT

Where knowledge is enacted into meaningful change.

Founded as the first laboratory within the Yale Program for Psychedelic Science, our story is intertwined with YPPS’s vision for transforming psychedelic research.

A group of people joining hands in a circle

Two people sit in a room. One has tried everything. The other is searching for answers. What happens next depends on the science we build, the clinicians we train, and the knowledge we share.

ENACT was founded to change what happens in that room. Not an acronym. A declaration of intent.

ENACT is the founding laboratory of the Yale Program for Psychedelic Science at Yale School of Medicine. Names in use — ENACT, ENACT Lab, ENACT Research Collective — are not mutually exclusive. YPPS is the parent program.

Mission & vision

Why the lab exists, and where it is going.

Our Vision

A future in which evidence-based psychedelic medicine is part of mainstream psychiatry, in which every clinician who needs these tools has been trained to use them, and in which the millions of people living without adequate options finally have some.

Our Mission

To enact impact through research: conducting rigorous clinical trials of psychedelic and consciousness-altering therapeutics across conditions, capturing what we learn, and training the next generation of clinicians so that knowledge moves from the study into practice.

Our Motto

“We move as a group and grow as individuals.” ENACT is a collective — researchers, clinicians, coordinators, and trainees moving together toward a shared purpose. When one of us publishes, we all publish. When one of us learns, we all learn.

What we do

The operational foundation of YPPS.

Beyond our direct research initiatives, ENACT provides the structural support, methodological frameworks, and collaborative environment that enable the incubation of specialized research divisions — transforming isolated expertise into interconnected knowledge networks that collectively advance the field.

Direct research

Clinical trials from first-in-population studies to Phase 3 registration trials, conducted under FDA oversight — with the whole person, not a single diagnosis, at the center.

Structural support

Methodological frameworks and a collaborative environment in which specialized research divisions incubate, mature, and stand on their own.

Knowledge in motion

Sustaining the continuous flow between inquiry and application, so that knowledge flows into practice and principles come alive through purpose.

How we work

Four lenses, and a flywheel.

Our research is organized around four lenses. Each one is a different kind of question to ask of the same study, and equity and ethics run across all four.

Research produces knowledge, knowledge trains clinicians, and what those clinicians carry into practice shapes the next research question. It is a loop, which is why the lab calls it a flywheel rather than a straight line.

Measures of relationship with suffering

A symptom score is not the only way to tell whether something has changed for a person. Our studies also measure:

  • psychological flexibility
  • meaning-making
  • self-compassion
  • social connectedness
  • functional capacity

… plus symptoms.
